This measures musical tempo, not a pulse. BPM is used for both, and the two have nothing to do with each other — nothing on this page can measure a heart rate, and tapping along to your own pulse will not produce a medically meaningful number.

About Tap BPM

Tapping along is the oldest way to find a tempo and still the most reliable one outside a studio. Play the track, tap the beat, and the gaps between your taps give the number.

The part most tools leave out is how much to trust it. Eight taps that drift produce an average just as confidently as eight even ones, and the display looks identical. So this page shows a steadiness figure next to the tempo: when it is low the number has settled, and when it is high the number is still an opinion.

One clarification before anything else, because the abbreviation is shared. BPM here means beats per minute in music. It is also used for heart rate, and the two are unrelated — this page cannot measure a pulse and should not be used to try.

How to get a number that holds still

  1. Play the music first and listen for a few bars before tapping. The most common error is not uneven tapping but tapping along to a beat that is not the one you meant.
  2. Tap eight to twelve times, then read both numbers. Fewer than that and the average has not had time to settle; many more and you are just holding it steady.
  3. Watch the steadiness rather than the tempo. When it drops and stays low, the tempo has stopped moving and you can stop tapping.
  4. If the steadiness stays high, check which beat you are on. Tapping the main beat on one bar and an off-beat on the next produces alternating intervals, and that looks like unsteadiness while the tempo is fine.
  5. Stop for a couple of seconds to start a fresh measurement. The gap is discarded rather than folded into the average, so you can take another run without reloading.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tap BPM free, does it need an account, and is anything uploaded?

It is free, needs no account, and sends nothing. The timing arithmetic runs in the page and is discarded when you close the tab. No history is kept either, so write the tempo down if you want it later.

Does this measure my heart rate?

No, and please do not use it for that. BPM is used for both musical tempo and pulse, but this page only counts the gaps between your taps — it cannot see you, and tapping along to your own pulse gives a number with no medical meaning. Anything about your heart belongs with a doctor or a device made for it.

How many taps do I need?

Two gives a tempo, eight gives a tempo you can rely on. The reason is not the average but the steadiness figure: with only a couple of intervals there is nothing to compare, so the page cannot tell you whether the number has settled. Around a dozen is the sweet spot.

My tempo comes out at half or double what I expected.

Half or double is the most common outcome and it is not an error. Music has beats at several levels, and tapping every other beat halves the number while tapping twice per beat doubles it. Both are defensible readings of the same track; pick the level the music feels like it moves at, or simply halve or double the result.

How is this different from the spacebar counter or the click speed test?

Those count how many times you can press in a fixed period, so faster is better. This one measures the gaps between presses and converts them to a tempo, where speed is not a score at all — an even 90 is a better result here than a frantic 300.

Why does the steadiness matter more than the tempo?

Because the tempo alone cannot tell you whether it has finished moving. A number computed from wandering taps looks exactly like one computed from even taps, and only the spread separates them. When the steadiness is low the reading is done; when it is high the number will keep changing no matter how long you tap.
