Stop if it hurts. Pushing for one more note at either end is how voices get strained, and nothing on this page is worth that.

Headphones and a quiet room help more than an expensive microphone. Fans, keyboards and music playing nearby all produce pitches of their own.

This page will not tell you that you are a tenor or a soprano. A range is one input to that question and not the answer: which part of the range is comfortable, and what the voice sounds like there, matter at least as much. Sites that hand you a label from two notes are guessing.

About the Vocal Range Test

Finding your range takes about two minutes and a quiet room. Sing a note you are comfortable on, walk down until the sound stops being a note, then walk back up until the same thing happens at the top. The page names what it hears and keeps the extremes.

The measurement itself is honest arithmetic: the microphone signal is compared with itself to find the repeating period, and that period is converted into a note. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is recorded, and the two notes live in the page until you refresh.

What this page will not do is tell you your voice type. Range is one input to that question and a weak one on its own — the part of the range that is comfortable and the sound of the voice there matter at least as much. Any site that reads two notes and hands back a label is guessing, and you deserve to know that before you believe it.

One more thing, and it is the only warning that matters: stop if it hurts. Chasing one more semitone at either end is how people strain their voices, and no number here is worth that.

How to get a reading you can trust

  1. Find a quiet spot and put headphones on if you have them. A fan, a keyboard or music in the background all have pitches of their own and the page cannot tell them from you.
  2. Press start and allow the microphone. Nothing is recorded — the sound is analyzed as it arrives and then discarded.
  3. Begin on a comfortable note and hold it for a second so the reading settles. Short bursts and slides are ignored on purpose.
  4. Walk down one note at a time until the sound goes breathy or rattly rather than clear, then stop. That last clear note is your bottom, not the noise below it.
  5. Come back to the middle, walk up the same way, and stop at the last note that still sounds like a note rather than a squeak. Two passes each way is plenty.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vocal Range Test free, does it need an account, and is my voice recorded or uploaded?

It is free, needs no account, and nothing is recorded or uploaded. The microphone signal is analyzed in the page as it arrives and then thrown away — there is no file, no server, and nothing left after you close the tab. Stopping the test also releases the microphone, so the recording indicator goes away.

What is a normal vocal range?

Most untrained adults land somewhere between one and a half and two octaves, and trained singers usually extend that at both ends. But the number varies enormously with the day, the warm-up and how you were taught, so treat a single reading as a snapshot rather than a fact about you.

Will it tell me if I am a soprano, a tenor, or something else?

No, and that is deliberate. Voice type depends on where the voice is comfortable and how it sounds there, not just on the extremes it can reach. Two people with the same two notes can sit in different categories, so a label produced from a range alone is a guess dressed up as a result.

Why does it ignore my very lowest sound?

Because below a point the sound stops having a clear pitch — it becomes a rattle, and there is no note in it to measure. The page only accepts pitches within the range of a singing voice, which also keeps out mains hum and background noise. If your bottom note reads higher than you expected, try holding it steadier rather than lower.

Does the microphone quality matter?

Less than the room does. A laptop microphone in a quiet room beats a good microphone next to a fan, because the page has to pick your pitch out of everything else it hears. It also asks the browser to switch off echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain, since all three reshape the sound before it can be measured.

How is this different from your perfect pitch test?

The perfect pitch test plays a note and asks you to name it, so it measures your ear. This one listens to a note you produce, so it measures your voice. Neither predicts the other: plenty of people with a wide range cannot name a note, and plenty with a good ear have a narrow one.
