Things people get wrong about the sea

  1. Why does drinking seawater make thirst worse?

    Answer Removing that much salt costs the body more water than the drink supplies

    Seawater is saltier than your body fluids, so your kidneys need more fresh water to flush the salt than the drink supplied. You end up in deficit, which is why it accelerates dehydration rather than relieving it.

  2. How does the risk of a shark attack compare with everyday risks?

    Answer Attacks are very rare, and the danger is routinely exaggerated in popular accounts

    Attacks are extraordinarily rare — a handful of deaths worldwide in a typical year, against thousands of drownings. The risk on the drive to the beach is far higher than the risk in the water.

  3. People often say most of the ocean is unexplored. What does that actually mean?

    Answer Much of the seafloor is mapped only at coarse resolution from satellites, not surveyed close up

    It means resolution, not blank spaces. Most of the seafloor is mapped from satellite gravity data at kilometer scale; only a minority has been surveyed by ship in the detail we have for the surface of Mars.

  4. Is the ocean silent below the surface?

    Answer No; it is full of sound, and sound carries farther in water than in air

    It is noisy down there. Whales, snapping shrimp, breaking waves, rain and ship engines all put sound into the water, and sound moves through seawater roughly four to five times faster than through air, which is why it carries so far. The idea of a silent sea comes from the title of a 1956 film, not from any measurement.

    Cold-water corals build reefs hundreds of meters down in cold, dark water, including very large ones off Norway. They carry no algae inside them, so they catch food drifting past instead of living on sunlight, and depth stops being an obstacle.

    No. Land itself rises or sinks in different places, and currents and gravity redistribute water unevenly, so some coastlines see several times the global average and a few see almost none.

  3. Expect the last round to be the hardest even if the first four went well, because it is about unlearning rather than knowing.
  4. Where a question touches something that varies by place or species, the correct answer says so instead of giving a single confident rule.
  5. Nothing here is safety advice. Where a question mentions stings or seawater, it is describing what is understood, not telling you what to do in an emergency.

Do I need to have studied any science?

No. The first three rounds are the sort of thing that comes from documentaries and school, and the last two reward attention rather than training. The final round asks you to unlearn rather than recall, which is a different kind of work from the four before it.

How is this different from your science or environment quiz?

The science quiz is about method and principles, and the environment quiz is about energy, waste and how much various changes matter. This one is about the ocean as a place, and the three overlap only at a couple of points, such as the tides and ocean acidification.

Is any of this medical or safety advice?

None of it. One question mentions jellyfish stings and another seawater, and both describe what is understood rather than what to do. For anything involving injury or health, ask a medical professional rather than a quiz.

Why do some answers say it depends?

Because for those questions it does. Sea level change is uneven from place to place, and first aid for stings varies by species and region. An option that gives one confident rule for those would be the wrong answer, however satisfying it sounds.

What counts as a good score?

Thirty-five and up means the geography, the water and the life are solid. Forty-five and up means the last round went well too, and that round is about statements almost everyone has heard and few have checked.
