    The axis stays tilted in the same direction while the Earth orbits, so each hemisphere leans toward the Sun for half the year. This is why the two hemispheres have opposite seasons on the same date.

    Heat from the interior sets up slow circulation in the mantle, and the rigid plates ride along on top. The pace is a few centimeters a year, but over millions of years that redraws every coastline.

    Sunlight evaporates water, and gravity brings it back down. All of the planet's water has been through this loop many times — none of it is new, and none is lost.

    The control is what makes a comparison mean anything. Without it you cannot tell whether people improved because of the treatment, or because they would have improved anyway.

  2. Two things rise together over time. What does that establish?

    Answer That they are correlated, which is not the same as one causing the other

    Correlation can come from coincidence, from a third factor driving both, or from causation running the other way. Ice cream sales and drowning deaths rise together, and neither causes the other — summer causes both.

  3. What does the word theory mean in science?

    Answer An explanation supported by a large body of tested evidence

    In everyday speech a theory is a guess; in science it is the opposite end of the scale. A theory is a framework that has survived repeated testing and explains a wide range of observations.

  4. Why are studies with human participants often blinded?

    Answer Because knowing which group you are in can change the outcome

    Expectation changes results, in participants and in the researchers measuring them. Double-blinding hides the assignment from both sides, which is why it is the standard for testing treatments.

    A hypothesis has to be specific enough that some result would count against it. Wording it so that any outcome can be claimed as support is the most common way for the idea to become untestable.

    Any single study can produce a result by chance or through a flaw nobody noticed. When many fields tried repeating well-known findings, a large share did not hold up — which is why one striking study is a starting point, not a conclusion.

About the Science Quiz

Fifty questions in five rounds, and the fifth is the one that makes this different from a list of facts. Life, matter, forces, the Earth — and then how any of it came to be known.

That last round is the useful one. What a control group is for, why two things rising together does not mean one causes the other, what the word theory actually means, why studies are blinded. Those come up in the news every week, while the boiling point of a substance does not.

Nothing here depends on a recent discovery or a current record, because those age. Everything asked has been settled for decades and reads the same in ten years.

There are no diagrams and no images. Questions are written so the reasoning is in the words, which also means the quiz works on a phone and for anyone using a screen reader.

How it works

  1. Answer in order. Each round starts with what most people meet at school and ends with something that needs the reason behind the fact, not just the fact.
  2. Read all four options. Several questions include an answer that is true in general but does not answer what was asked.
  3. Do not skip the last round because it looks like a different subject. It is the part that transfers: those ideas are what let you judge a claim you have never seen before.
  4. Notice which round costs you most. Losing points across biology and chemistry is a content gap; losing them all in the last round is a method gap, and the two are closed differently.

Is the Science Quiz free, and do I need an account?

What level is it aimed at?

Adult general knowledge rather than a school syllabus. The first three rounds cover things most people met at school and half-remember, the Earth round rewards knowing mechanisms rather than names, and the last round assumes no science training at all — it is about reasoning, and the options carry the definitions you need.

Are there diagrams or pictures to identify?

No. Every question is written so the reasoning is in the words. That keeps the quiz fast on a phone, usable with a screen reader, and free of images that belong to someone else. It also means nothing hinges on how well a small diagram renders on your screen.

Does it cover astronomy?

Deliberately not, beyond what belongs to Earth science. We have a separate space quiz for astronomy and spaceflight, and repeating those questions here would just be the same quiz twice. Take both if you want the full range — only the seasons, the tides and why the sky is blue are asked in both.

Are any of the health questions medical advice?

No, and none are intended as any. The biology round asks about how bodies work as a matter of fact — what red blood cells carry, what mitochondria do — and never about symptoms, treatment or what you should do. For anything concerning your own health, ask a doctor rather than a quiz.

What counts as a good score?

Thirty-five is a solid result and the mid-forties is about as far as this quiz goes. But the shape matters more than the number: points lost across the first three rounds are a content gap that reading closes, while points lost in the last round are a reasoning gap, and that one is worth closing first.
