About Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese Zodiac assigns one of twelve animals to each year in a repeating cycle, and this page works out which one is yours. Type your birth date and you get the animal, a personality reading, notes on work and relationships, a light reading for today, and how your sign meets each of the other eleven. The reason we ask for the full date rather than just the year is the part most calculators get wrong: the animal changes at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. Lunar New Year falls somewhere between 21 January and 20 February, so anyone born in that window belongs to the previous year's animal. Roughly one person in nine is born early enough in the year to be affected, and a year-only calculator hands all of them the wrong animal. Everything here runs inside your browser — nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is no sign-up. Treat the readings as entertainment: the twelve-year cycle is a calendar tradition, not a measurement of anyone's character.

How the Chinese Zodiac calculator works

Is this free, and do I need to sign up or install anything?

It is free with no account, no email and no install. The whole calculation is a few lines of arithmetic that run in your browser, which is also why your birth date never leaves your device — there is no server here to send it to.

Why do you ask for my full birth date instead of just the year?

Because the animal changes at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. Lunar New Year moves between 21 January and 20 February depending on the moon, so someone born on 5 February 2021 is a Rat, not an Ox. A calculator that only takes the year gets every one of those births wrong, and that is a large group — roughly one birth in nine falls before the cutoff.

What makes this different from the zodiac calculators I have already seen?

Two things. Most only ask for the year, which breaks for January and early-February births as described above. And most stop at the animal — this one also gives the compatibility relationships the tradition actually uses, calculated rather than copied from a table, so the four groupings stay internally consistent for all twelve signs.

Is any of this accurate or scientific?

No. There is no evidence that the year of your birth shapes your personality, and the readings here are written as entertainment. The one thing this page is strict about is the calendar arithmetic: the animal you get for a given date is correct by the traditional rules, even though what the animal is said to mean is folklore.

Should I use the compatibility results to make a real decision?

Please do not. Compatibility by birth year is used seriously in some places for matchmaking, hiring and business partnerships, and that is exactly the use this page is not built for. Nobody's suitability as a partner, employee or colleague is set by the year they were born.

Why does my sign appear on some sites but not others?

Usually the Lunar New Year cutoff again. Sites that ask only for a birth year assign January births to the wrong animal, so if you were born in January or early February you will see two different answers around the internet. Check the date of Lunar New Year for your birth year — if your birthday came first, the previous year's animal is the correct one.

Which years does the calculator cover?

1924 to 2044. Lunar New Year is set by astronomical calculation rather than a formula, so the dates live in a table rather than being computed. Outside that range the page declines to answer instead of guessing, because a confident wrong answer is worse than none.
