Why Is My Computer Slow — Find the Cause Before Fixing

Almost every answer to this starts with a list of things to do: clear temporary files, disable startup programs, run a scan. Doing them in order eventually works, but it wastes an afternoon and teaches you nothing, because the thing that finally helped is buried among nine that did not.

There is a shorter route. Nearly all slowness comes from one of four places — memory, storage, heat, or the network — and the symptom usually says which one before you touch anything. A machine that crawls only when many things are open is not the same problem as one that is quick for a minute and then is not, and neither is the same as one where a single website drags.

Four causes, and the symptom that points at each

Start by matching what you actually see to one of these, because the fix is different in every case.

If it slows down as you open more programs or tabs, and speeds up again when you close them, the machine is short of memory. This is the most common cause by a distance on machines that are otherwise fine.

If it is fine for the first minute of anything demanding and then drops off, and the fans get loud, it is heat. The processor is lowering its own speed to stay within a safe temperature, which is a protection rather than a fault.

If everything is slow all the time, including opening a folder, and the drive is nearly full, it is storage. Systems need free room to work in, and a drive with a couple of percent left has almost none.

And if only things that go over the network are slow — pages, video, a call — while the machine itself responds instantly, it is not the computer at all.

Anything that does not match one of those four is worth treating as a fifth case: something specific is broken, usually one program or one recent change, and the last section covers that.

The five-minute check, in order

Do these in sequence before changing anything. Each one either points at a cause or rules one out.

Restart, and time how long it takes to become usable. Restarting is not a superstition: it clears everything held in memory and starts the system from a known state, which fixes a surprising share of slowdowns outright. If it stays slow immediately after a restart with nothing open, memory pressure is not your problem.

Open the system's own activity monitor — Task Manager on Windows, Activity Monitor on a Mac — and sort by memory, then by processor. One program using most of either is your answer, and it is often a browser with many tabs or something left running from days ago.

Check free space on the drive that holds the system. Under about ten percent free is where things start to suffer.

Put a hand near the vents while doing something demanding. Hot air and loud fans plus a slowdown after the first minute is the heat pattern, and it usually means dust rather than a failure.

Finally, if only web pages are slow, open something offline. If that is instant, stop looking at the computer.

Sudden or gradual — the question that halves the list

Before anything else, ask when it changed. The answer removes half the possibilities on its own.

Gradual, over a year or more, is accumulation. More programs set themselves to start with the system, the drive filled up, the software you use grew heavier while the machine did not. Nothing is broken; the load simply crept past what the hardware comfortably carries.

Sudden, over days, is an event. Something was installed, something updated, a setting changed, or a fan finally clogged. The useful question is what changed in that window, and the answer is usually recent enough to remember.

The two need opposite responses. Gradual slowness responds to reducing the load — fewer startup programs, fewer open tabs, more free space, and eventually more memory. Sudden slowness responds to finding and undoing the one change, and doing the load reduction first just hides it.

Cleaner and optimiser programs are the most recommended remedy and among the least effective. The temporary files they delete are rarely what was slowing anything down, the registry entries they claim to fix are not a meaningful cost, and some of them add a background process of their own. A drive short of space is a real problem, but you can free space yourself by finding the largest folders, and you will know what you removed.

Reinstalling the system does work, and it is a heavy way to solve a problem you have not identified. It wipes accumulated startup programs and clutter, which is why it feels miraculous, but if the cause was heat or a full drive it will be slow again in a week. Diagnose first; reinstall as a last resort rather than a first move.

Adding memory helps only the memory case. If one task is limited by the speed of the processor, more memory changes nothing at all, and that is easy to check before buying: watch whether memory is actually full while the machine is being slow.

And more antivirus is not better. Two real-time scanners running together is a well-known way to make a machine sluggish, and one is enough.

What actually helps, cheapest first

Work down this list and stop when the machine is fine, because the later items cost money and the earlier ones usually do the job.

Cut what starts with the system. Both Windows and macOS list these in settings, and years of installations leave a queue of things that launch and stay resident for no reason. This alone often fixes slow startup and slow first ten minutes.

Free real space — several tens of gigabytes if you can, not a few hundred megabytes. Large downloads, old video, and duplicate copies of the same photo library are where it hides.

Reduce browser tabs, and check the extensions. Each tab is a small program, and a browser is usually the largest single consumer of memory on a personal machine. Extensions you have forgotten about are the same cost with none of the benefit.

Clear the dust. On a laptop that means vents and, if you are comfortable opening it, the fan. This is the single most effective physical fix for the heat pattern and it costs nothing.

Then, and only then, hardware. Moving from a mechanical drive to a solid-state one is the largest improvement available on an older machine by a wide margin. More memory is second, and only if you have seen memory run out.

When it is the network and not the machine

A large share of what people call a slow computer is a slow connection, and the two feel identical from the chair.

The test takes ten seconds: do something that touches no network at all. Open a document already on the drive, or a photo. If that is instant while a web page takes eight seconds, the machine is fine.

From there, narrow it the same way. If only one site is slow, it is that site. If everything is slow on one device but fine on another, the problem is that device or its link to the router, not the service. If everything is slow on every device, it is the router or the line, and restarting the router is the first thing to try because it is free and often works.

One more distinction is worth knowing, because it explains connections that test fast and feel slow: bandwidth is how much data can move per second, and latency is how long each round trip takes. Video and downloads need bandwidth. Calls, games and pages that fetch dozens of small pieces need low latency. A connection can be excellent at one and poor at the other.
