Keyboard Switch Types: What Actually Differs
There are three families of switch and a great many names. The names are the confusing part: colors are not a standard, and the same color from two makers can feel different.

Three families, and colors are not a standard
Linear switches move straight down with no interruption. Tactile ones have a bump partway down that you can feel. Clicky ones add a mechanism that makes a sharp noise at the same point. That is the whole taxonomy, and everything else is a variation on those three.
Color names are marketing, not specification. A red is usually linear, a brown usually tactile and a blue usually clicky, because one early maker set that pattern and others followed it loosely. There is no body enforcing it, the same color differs between makers, and newer lines use names that map to nothing at all.
A color is a starting hint and never an answer. What you actually want is the family plus the three numbers in the next section, and any seller worth buying from publishes them.
The three numbers that decide how it feels
Actuation point is how far down the key registers. Shorter means the press counts sooner, which is the thing people call fast. It also means resting a finger on a key is more likely to type a letter you did not mean.
Operating force is how hard you have to push, usually given in grams. Light switches tire you less on a long day and punish heavy hands with accidental presses; heavy ones do the reverse. This is the number most closely tied to comfort over hours.
Total travel is how far the key goes before it stops. Shorter travel feels quick and can feel abrupt. Nothing here is better in the abstract — the pairing that suits a fast typist with light hands is the wrong pairing for someone who bottoms out every key.

Sound comes mostly from the keyboard, not the switch
People choose switches for sound and are then surprised, because the switch is only part of what you hear. The case material and how hollow it is, the plate the switches mount to, whether there is foam inside, the keycap plastic and even the desk under it all change the result more than most people expect.
The case, plate, foam and keycaps are why the same switch sounds thin in one board and full in another, and why recordings are hard to compare unless the rest of the build matches.
Silent switches do reduce noise, mostly the sound of the key hitting the bottom, and they usually cost some crispness in feel to do it. They also do not silence the stabilized keys such as the space bar, which are often the loudest thing on the board. If quiet is a requirement rather than a preference, plan for the whole keyboard rather than just the switch.
Will it make you faster or better at games?
For typing, the honest answer is that the switch is a small factor next to practice and layout. Comfort matters, and comfort keeps you typing longer, but a switch swap is not a speed upgrade. If you want to know rather than assume, measure yourself before and after on the same test.
For games, the argument is about a few milliseconds of actuation and about whether you can press a key again without lifting fully. Both are real and both are small compared with the frame rate of what you are playing and the reaction time of the person playing it.
The exception worth taking seriously is comfort under load. If your hands ache after two hours, a lighter switch can change that, and that will show up in results in a way that a millisecond will not.
Check the board you already have first

When not to buy
If you share a room or an office, the polite range is narrow and the decision is mostly made for you — and a clicky switch in a quiet office is a way to annoy people for years.
If the keyboard is built into a laptop, switches are not a choice you have. An external board is, and it is a bigger change than any switch difference.
And if you cannot try one, buy a switch tester or borrow before committing to a full board. Feel is the one specification nobody can read off a page, which is precisely why the numbers above only get you close.

Those colors are not a standard, so the question is really linear, tactile or clicky. Linear if you want no interruption, tactile if you want to feel the press register, clicky if you want to hear it too and nobody nearby will mind. Then compare the actual actuation, force and travel figures rather than the color.
I need something quiet. What actually helps?
Silent switches help with the bottom-out noise, but the case, the plate and the stabilized keys such as the space bar matter as much. If quiet is a requirement, treat it as a whole-keyboard decision. A switch alone will not turn a hollow board into a quiet one.
Will changing switches make me type faster?
Probably not measurably. Practice and layout dominate, and switch feel mostly affects how long you stay comfortable. If you want to settle it for yourself, take a typing test before and after on the same day and the same text rather than trusting the impression.
What does hot-swappable mean and does it matter?
It means the switches pull out and push in without soldering, so you can change your mind later or replace one that fails. It matters most for a first mechanical keyboard, when you do not yet know what you like, and much less once you do.
Can I change the switches in a laptop keyboard?
In general no. Laptop keyboards use low-profile mechanisms built into the chassis, and they are not a user-serviceable choice. If the feel is the problem, an external keyboard is the change to make.
