About the Color Perception Test

The Color Perception Test shows you a grid of tiles in one color, with a single tile shifted slightly lighter or darker. Find it and the next grid is harder: the difference shrinks and the grid grows. It keeps going until you miss three times, and then it tells you the level you reached and how small a difference you were still catching. This measures discrimination — how fine a gap between two shades you can still notice — which is a different question from whether your color vision has a deficiency. Someone with perfectly ordinary color vision might stop at level nine or level nineteen, and both are normal. The number depends heavily on your screen and the light in your room, which is why we report what you did rather than grading you against anyone. There is no sign-up, nothing is stored, and the whole thing runs in your browser.

How the Color Perception Test works

  1. Press Start. A grid appears with every tile the same color except one.
  2. Tap the tile that looks slightly different. It may be lighter or darker — that alternates at random so no habit forms.
  3. Each level shrinks the difference and, every second level, adds a row and a column. Level one is obvious; the twenties are not.
  4. You have three lives. There is no clock, so take the time to look — rushing costs lives without measuring anything useful.
  5. When the run ends you get your level, the grid size you were on, and the lightness difference that level required.
  6. Play again on the same screen in the same light if you want a comparison. Changing either one changes the result more than practice does.

Is the color test free, and does it need an account?

It is free with no account and no install. The grids are generated in your browser, and nothing about your run is sent anywhere or saved.

How long does the Color Perception Test take?

A minute or two, depending on how far you get. There is no timer — the run ends when you have used your three lives, so a careful player takes longer and that is fine.

Does this tell me if I am color blind?

No. This measures how small a difference you can spot between two shades of the same color, which is a different thing from a color vision deficiency. If reds and greens look similar to you, or if even the early levels feel impossible, the color blind test is the page you want — and if that one also gives you an unexpected result, an optometrist is the next step rather than another website.

What level counts as good?

We do not publish a scale, because the honest answer would be "it depends on your monitor". A phone in a dark room resolves differences an office laptop under fluorescent light cannot. Your own level on your own screen, repeated, is a real comparison; a stranger's number is not.

Why does my result change so much between attempts?

Screen brightness, ambient light, viewing angle and even how long you have been staring all move it. Cheap panels also dither, which makes tiny differences flicker rather than sit still. Run it three times in the same conditions and use the middle result.

What makes this different from the color tests I have already tried?

Most color games ask you to arrange hues in order, which mostly measures patience with dragging. This one isolates a single question — can you see this difference, yes or no — and shrinks it until the answer is no. That gives you a number with a meaning: the smallest gap you were still catching.

Is there a color equivalent of perfect pitch?

Not something this test measures. The tiles sit side by side and the only question is which one differs, so what gets measured is relative — there is always something to compare against, and you are never asked to name a shade from memory. Perfect pitch means naming a note with no reference tone; the color version would be naming a shade with nothing beside it, which is the opposite of what happens here. Measuring that on a screen would be hard in any case, because the same shade looks different under different lighting and on different panels.

Does the test stop getting harder at some point?

The difference stops shrinking at 0.8 %, on purpose. Below that, ordinary 8-bit screens cannot render the two shades as different colors at all, so the test would be measuring your panel instead of your eyes. The grid stops growing as well — it reaches 8×8 at level 13 — so from level 19 on every round repeats the same difficulty, and what you are measuring is how long you can keep finding the odd tile.
